Jet helmets, as we know them today, emerged in the early 1950s following the work of a Californian academic for the Army US Air. However, it was after the tragic death of T.E. Lawrence (better known as Lawrence of Arabia) riding his Brough Superior SS100, that one of the doctors called to her bedside, Hugh Cairns, begin to think about a solution to the head injuries among motorcyclists.
